WHERE IN THE WORLD
Out of Water
IT WAS 147 YEARS AGO when a giant squid almost 17 metres (55 feet) long was found stranded offshore in Thimble Tickle, a fishing village in Newfoundland and Labrador. The coastal town, which has since been renamed, pays homage to its short-lived massive aquatic visitor with this life-sized replica, replete with an interpretation centre and a gift shop.
Our winter issue’s “Where in the World?” featured the cable suspension footbridge spanning the Miramichi River in New Brunswick, linking the communities of Priceville and McNamee. Initially built in 1938, it got damaged the following year and was reconstructed, then upgraded in 1961. Its final iteration, in 1988, now provides a stable vantage point for enjoying panoramic river views.
