WHERE IN THE WORLD?
Taking Root
In the Bonavista Peninsula, where visitors flock to see puffins, whales and icebergs, you will also find these small, earth-covered mounds. They were traditionally built for storing root vegetables, such as potatoes and carrots, thanks to their natural insulation. There are more than a hundred in the area, including one dating back to 1859. Half are still in use today, with locals embracing their roots and using them for their own food storage. — Truc Nguyen
