A MESSAGE FROM CAA

Let’s Share the Road
WITH WINTER BEHIND US (or so we hope!), we see on our roads the return of cyclists, walkers, runners and plenty of roadside activity. Now more than ever, it is crucial to prioritize safety for everyone sharing the road. As safety advocates for Atlantic Canada, we are focused on road safety all year round, but this spring, we urge all road users to pay particular attention to safety. With more people opting for bicycles and e-bikes as a green mode of transportation and for exercise, it’s essential to be alert and on the lookout for cyclists. Always maintain a safe distance when overtaking them and be vigilant at intersections. Keep in mind that a moment’s distraction (do tuck away that phone) can have lasting consequences. Spring is also a busy time for roadside workers. Whether it’s a construction crew, a road-maintenance team, emergency services or a tow truck driver providing roadside assistance, their safety is paramount. The Slow Down Move Over (SDMO) law in every province is not just a guideline. It is a critical piece of legislation designed to protect those who work on the side of the road. This simple cautionary act — slowing down and moving over — can and does save lives. As we all embark on our spring adventures, let’s pledge to make road safety a priority. By exercising care and being considerate, we can ensure that the roads remain safe for each and every Atlantic Canadian, no matter their mode of transportation. Together, we can make a difference. Wishing you all a delightful season ahead and remember — in the words of celebrated Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery — “Nothing ever seems impossible in spring.”
